One of the skills you need to develop if you want to make it in the blogging world, financially that is, is to know how to make money blogging in a variety of different ways.
These days there isn’t just a single form of monetization that you can use for your content – there are dozens of different ways you can earn a living from your blog and if you’re hoping to quit your job, or just supplement your current income, you need to learn how these different ways work and how you can implement them for your own benefit.
Today, I want to share with you some of my recommended methods that you use to make money from a blog, even if you’re just getting started.
Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links, which means I may receive compensation from the different companies that I mention in this post. I’ve personally used each product/service/company that I recommend and I would only make a recommendation for something I believe to be the best. All opinions expressed here are my own. Please see my disclaimer for more information.
This guide is designed to help you make a little extra money on the side, and hopefully you can even use some of these different tips and tactics to eventually start blogging full time.
Before I dive into the meat and bones of this guide, here are some things that you should already have going for you before you start worrying about making money online:
- Start Your Blog!
Hopefully if you’re reading this post you have already started your own blog, and if not then I recommend checking out my super detailed guide on how to start a lifestyle blog!
The guide will help you get started really quickly and is really easy to follow along with getting your website or blog up and running.
- Make Sure You’re Self-Hosted
I know it might seem worth it to start a free blog, since you don’t have to pay for any hosting or anything at all, but I would avoid this completely because your options from monetizing your content are severely limited when you’re not self-hosted.
It costs just a few bucks per month to host your own blog, where you have control over everything, and I would recommend doing so with SiteGround.
- Have a Great Design
From the beginning you want to spend some time focusing on making sure that your blog looks great and that people like what they see when they stumble onto your content.
There are plenty of different themes to choose from, so you barely have to do anything on your own to get your blog looking incredible.
For WordPress themes, I recommend checking out ThemeForest and browsing through their incredible collection until you find something you like.
- Create Amazing Content
It’s going to be a lot harder to make money if your content (blog posts) are mediocre, uninformative, or uninspiring.
You want to focus on creating the best content that you can and spending time to make sure that your blog posts provide as much value as possible to your readers.
Your content is one of the most important parts of your blog, and the better your content is the more money you’re going to be able to make in the long run.

One thing that I want you to keep in mind is that while it’s definitely possible to make money your first month blogging, for most people this is going to be very difficult, especially if you have to juggle a full-time job, parenting responsibilities, household chores, a social life, and everything else that you have to deal with on a regular basis.
On the other hand, it’s definitely achievable to make money blogging, especially if you work hard and spend the time to create great content.
I was lucky enough to make some money in my first month of blogging, and I hope that this guide leads you on the right path so that you’re able to achieve the same thing.
Now that I’ve gone over some of the introductory basics, let’s take a look at the different ways that you can make money blogging and how you can implement them on your own blog.
How to Actually Make Money with a Blog
For beginners and long-term bloggers alike, affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money with your blog.
In case you don’t know, affiliate marketing is when you earn a small commission by promoting a product or service and making a sale on what you’re promoting.
For example, one of the biggest and most popular affiliate networks is the one Amazon has, known as Amazon Associates.
The way it works is you add a link on your blog to a product on Amazon, and if someone clicks on your link and buys a product within 24-hours you earn a commission between 2% and 12% depending on what they buy.
Higher priced products can do really well in this case, especially if you’re promoting products like cameras or mattresses.
Another popular affiliate network is the one offered by Bluehost.
For every person that signs up for Bluehost hosting through one of your affiliate links, you can earn $65.
There are so many different affiliate networks out there covering a wide range of products and services, so regardless of your niche you can definitely find something to promote and earn money with.
I recommend checking out my guide on affiliate marketing if you want a more in-depth look at how you can start using this method of monetizing your blog.
Another great way that bloggers make money, especially beginners, is through display advertisements, otherwise known as “ads”.
These are basically digital advertisements that are displayed on your blog for your readers to see. Depending on the network that you’re using, the ads can be relevant to the interests of your audience, or they could cover a broader topic without as much relevance to your typical reader.
There are a few different ways that you can earn money through display advertisements, with the most popular being:
Someone clicks on the ad that’s displayed and you earn a small fee from each click
A certain number of people view your ad (usually 1,000 as a minimum) and you earn a set amount for every 1,000 views
Some topics are going to be a lot more monetizable than others, and depending on what you’re blogging about you have the potential to make quite a bit of money each day, or just pennies.
It’s a good idea to start using these ads from the beginning, if you’re interested in using them at all, and as your traffic starts to grow the more money you’re going to make every day.
As for choosing the best ad network, I recommend checking out the following:
Both of these display ad types can be easily integrated into your content, and it’s even easier to do so if you’re using a plug-in like “Ad-Inserter”.
At first, you might just be making a few pennies or dollars each day, but as your traffic grows you’re going to start to make more money and it all begins to add up.
Your Own Product or Service
Arguably, one of the best ways to make money blogging is by promoting your own product or service to your audience.
The reason why this is such a great way of monetizing a blog is because you have total control over what you promote including what the content is, the specific product or service that you’re promoting, your price, and you only need to get relevant traffic if you want to start earning.
This way you’re not relying on anybody else or any other companies to make some money, and selling your own product or service is one of the most lucrative ways of earning an income online.
If you want to take advantage of this method, I recommend starting an email list right when you start your blog. This is going to allow you to build a list of interested and dedicated followers that are going to be a lot more likely to purchase any of your own products or services.
You can also use the space on your side bar as well as your blog posts themselves to promote your own products or services, so there are a lot of different ways that you can make some money with something that you actually created, as long as it’s super helpful and practical for your audience.

These days sponsored posts are all the rage, and there are a ton of companies out there you can sign up with to connect with brands and companies looking to work with bloggers.
Writing a sponsored post is basically when you and a company or brand partner together to promote specific services, products, discounts, other brands, social media accounts, or anything else that you would both benefit from.
This can be especially lucrative if you have a decent social media following and the more traffic that your blog gets the better the offers are going to be that you receive from brands and companies.
Even when you’re just starting out, you can sign up for the different websites that connect influencers with brands and companies, you don’t even need a huge following or lots of traffic to get started.
Alternatively, you can consider reaching out to brands or specific companies directly to see if they’re interested in working together in exchange for some financial compensation or even in exchange for a sponsored product or service.
